100 Day of Lovingkindness

I just found a wonderful Google+ group called 100 Days of Lovingkindness about taking lovingkindness practice into daily life. Started on April 12, the period is broken into four: 25 days of cultivating lovingkindness, 25 days of cultivating compassion, 25 days of cultivating appreciation, and 25 days of cultivating love with insight (also known as equanimity). These practices are known as the “Brahmavihāras” (Divine Abodes), or the Immeasurables (apramāṇa). Lovingkindness is the basis... Read more...

A battle royal is now underway between Big Oil and the people of Longmont, Colorado.

In November, 60% of Longmont voters passed Ballot Question 300 with both Republican and Democratic support. The measure prohibited fracking within the city limits making Longmont the first city in the state to enact such a ban.
On Dec. 6 Governor Hickenlooper said the state will not sue Longmont again over the action of voters but that it will support any lawsuit by companies.

Jen Slotterback was hiking in her favorite park when she found signs of surveying for gas drilling, or fracking. She went home and told her husband Jim, and although the two had never been actively involved in the issue of gas drilling, they immediately began a campaign to save the park. The board that controlled the park was set to vote on whether to drill in the park in 11 days. The story of the Slotterbacks' journey of those 11 days is the subject of this film.

Earlier research had discovered the no-brainer that women judged the dance movements of stronger or more risk-taking men as more attractive, hence pegging them as better dancers. But this new research suggests that much more information is being conveyed through dance than anyone could guess. Bernhard Fink, of the University of Göttingen said that dance,... Read more...

Deep v. Shallow

On Nantucket island, in the summer of 2001, Benjamin Wagner was Fred Rogers’ real-life neighbor. That summer, Rogers told Wagner to spread the message that “deep and simple is far more essential than shallow and complex.” After Rogers’ death in 2003, Benjamin and his brother Christofer committed themselves to learning more about the man and discovering how his philosophy has changed the world.

Life is transformed by Fred Rogers. The friendship with the PBS icon sets the young... Read more...

Samsara

Samsara is a Sanskrit word that means “the ever turning wheel of life” and is the point of departure for the filmmakers as they search for the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives. Filmed over a period of almost five years and in twenty-five countries, Smsara transports us to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites, and natural wonders. By dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, Samsara subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary, instead... Read more...
