Translating adult speak

Translating adult speak
Do you remember being a child and erroneously interpreting adult speak?

I’m not sure if there’s some “official” term or word for it. If there is, let me know.

There are a couple turns of phrase I remember hearing and defining in my young, 10-year old or so mind. They’re funny to think about now, and I wish I could remember more.

For example, my mom always used to say certain decisions would be good “in the long run.” That sentence put the fear of God into me. I thought... Read more...

From Your Heart to Mine

From Your Heart to Mine
A student recently helped me remember why I teach yoga.

The studio I teach at, CorePower Yoga, is in the middle of a Yoga Challenge. Students are to complete 20 classes during 45 days, and along the way, they're entered to win drawings and prizes. One of those prizes was to be adjusted and assisted by an instructor all the way through a yoga class of his or her choice. This, my friends, is an amazing prize. This is a prize I want to win!

The managers at the studio asked for... Read more...

Milk and a blanket
Me and EverettPay attention. Out of the mouths of babes come some valuable reminders.

My two-year old nephew Everett, a wise little boy with a giggle that could melt the heart of the grumpiest grump and a precious dimple that definitely did not come from our side of the family, showed me the light.

We were gathered in his home for my mom’s August birthday. This of course meant more hustle and bustle than he was used to. Three extra people meant six extra pairs of lips and three more mouths full... Read more...

Are you in or are you out?

Are you in or are you out?
An old boyfriend from long ago once told me he believed the world was filled with two types of people: yes people and no people. Yes people instinctively say “yes,” with no further thought. A no person sticks with “no.”

I can’t remember the route we took to get into that conversation, but I did feel he was categorizing me into a “no” person for some activity I had probably just turned down. Unfortunately, there were several times I wish I had better exercised the power of no in... Read more...

Taking Yoga Off the Mat and Into the Hood

Taking Yoga Off the Mat and Into the Hood
I’ve had my lesson of the summer handed to me. It’s an oldie but a goodie and involves letting people walk their own path. Unbeknownst to them, my neighbors graciously served up the epiphany that smacked me across the face in yoga class a few weeks ago.

They have two dachshunds with separation anxiety issues. The pups are content as clams when their owners are home. As soon as all humans depart, though, they enter panic mode and bark for hours. This non-stop cacophony happens as their snouts... Read more...

Dessert With Breakfast Boosts Weight Loss: Study

Dessert With Breakfast Boosts Weight Loss: Study
I'll say it - I am not a fan of this new "study." It boggles my mind it's even being entered into the news stream. The last thing we need in this country is to promote eating sugar, trans fats and toxic, non-nutritious substances. And for breakfast, no less!

For me, sugar is an addictive substance. If one bite goes past my lips, my body wants more, more, more. To eat something like a donut first thing in the morning would set me up for a day of failure, of saying, "Well, just one more candy... Read more...

Ever feel like a fraud?

Ever feel like a fraud?
I’ve had a bit of writer and teacher... not block, per se, but fraud.

Just recently, in the middle of teaching yoga classes I started to question myself. Questions like who am I to teach this practice? What do I know? Why should these people listen to anything I have to say?

I’ve heard other yoga teachers report the longer they teach and the more knowledge they accrue, the more reluctant they are to hold the position of teacher. They simply want to go back to being a student. I feel a... Read more...
